BTEC Level 3 Applied Psychology (Extended Certificate)

What is it about?

Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes (the mind). Psychologists carry out scientific research to confirm many views of human behaviour. This subject teaches you skills in analysis, evaluation and discussion. You will learn how to evaluate scientific research while analysing studies which demonstrate how our brains work and why humans behave the way they do.

What will I be studying?

  • Unit 1 – Psychological Approaches and Applications 
  • Unit 2 – Conducting Psychological research 
  • Unit 3 – Health Psychology 
  • Unit 6 – Introduction to Psychopathology 

What skills will I learn?

Students will develop the transferable skills of numeracy, communication, and the application, presentation, interpretation, analysis and evaluation of information. Students will also develop a capacity for methodical and critical thought and learn to present information in a clear, coherent and effective manner.

How will I be assessed?

  • Unit 1 – external exam 1.5 hours 
  • Unit 3 – external exam 2 hours 
  • Unit 2 and Unit 6 are internal assessments. (coursework) 

Where might it lead me?

Many students go on to take higher education in psychology and other social sciences, then aim to find employment in a range of professions where an understanding of the human psyche is important.  Psychology qualifications can be used in careers specifically in the field of psychology such as educational psychology, clinical psychology and counselling but can also be used in any profession which involves working with people such as teaching, social work, law and policing.
